Bird-Watching in Malawi

Malawi as a birding destination is interesting, because the number of about 650 recorded species is surprisingly high for such a small country, and especially, because all the interesting birding sites that contribute to this number can easily be visited in a holiday of three or even two weeks. A total number of 350 in 2 weeks is possible and we have ticked more than 420 birds on a 20-days-tour.
The key habitats in Malawi are montane forest and grassland, miombo woodland and dry woodland and thicket in lowland area. Although Malawi does not have any real endemic, there is a good number of near-endemics and range-restricted birds that are difficult to be seen anywhere else (please see our page Interesting birds of Malawi).
Malawi`s topography is dominated by the rift valley that creates the lake and the lowland areas, as well as the numerous highland regions. Although the country is small, it is rich in natural diversity which is also reflected in its avifauna.
The infra-structure in Malawi is excellent according to African standards, so are the road conditions.

Bird watching in Malawi benefits from the fact that only short distances need to be covered in between the sites which adds extra-time to your birding and makes the tour easy and comfortable and therefore interesting for Africa-beginners and birders of any age.

Our birding guide is German and has been living in Malawi since 1993, leading tours throughout the country (and neighbouring countries) since 1996. He is absolutely familiar with the Malawian avifauna and the places of interest.
