Birding Day Trip Nkhata Bay Area

You leave in the morning to Nkhwadzi Forest which is renown for its easy access to East Coast Akalat. Other noteworthy species include African Broadbill, which is seen frequently, Green Coucal, Crested Guineafowl, Narina Trogon and Long-tailed Barred Cuckoo. The latter two are difficult to be seen outside their calling season which is from October (Trogon) and December (Cuckoo) until January or February. Other species that we have seen in this forest include Little and Yellow-bellied Greenbuls, Eastern Nicator, Bearded Scrub Robin, Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher and Black Goshawk.

From the forest we take you to a river, where we know a breeding site of Lesser Seedcracker. African Finfoot has been recorded here, too. We have also seen Half-collared Kingfisher and commonly Green Coucal.

In the dambo next to the river we have seen Black Coucal, Broad-tailed Warbler, Plain-backed Pipit, African Marsh Harrier, Green Sandpiper, Red-winged Widowbird and Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (in summer).

From the dambo area you go back to Nkhata Bay town, where we take you to Safari Cottage, where we have seen Red-headed Quelea breeding as well as Pygmy Kingfisher. Then we show you a spot which is reliable for Green Twinspot, very likely to be a breeding locality, too. Red-throated Twinspot and African Goshawk have been seen here.
