1) White-backed Night Heron
Resident; very good chances to see this elusive and nocturnal species are in the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary and Liwonde NP

2) African Pygmy Goose
Probably resident; regularly seen only at Liwonde National park, also found at Kuti and Vwaza Marsh.

3) Three-banded Courser
Only seen at night in South Luangwa NP; not found in Malawi

4) Bat Hawk
Resident; not uncommon in Nkhata Bay and at Lilongwe dambos. Hunts at dawn and dusk.

5) Ayre´s Hawk Eagle
Resident; occurs in small numbers in any open woodland

6) Red-chested Sparrowhawk
Resident; commonly seen on the Nyika Plateau

7) Pallid Harrier
Commonly seen on the Nyika Plateau from October to March

8) Palm-nut Vulture
Resident; commonly seen at Liwonde NP

9) Sekretarybird
Not annually reported in Malawi, but in recent years in small numbers on the Nyika Plareau from September to November

10) Dickinson´s Kestrel
Commonly seeen resident, especially Liwonde NP

Resident; commonly seen on the Nyika Plateau

Resident; only found in Lengwe National Park and possibly at Nkhwadzi Forest in Nkhata Bay

Recorded in all months; Localised and discreet; occurs in moist grassland, mainly in dambos

14) Striped Flufftail
Resident; not uncommon on the Nyika Plateau, also Mulanje and Viphya Plateau

15) Wattled Crane
Although in small numbers, this resident is frequently seen on the Nyika Plateau

16) Rock Pratincole
Intra-African breeding migrant; August to December; breeds at Kapichira Falls at Majete Game Reserve

17) Denham´s Bustard
Resident; frequently seen on the Nyika Plateau

18) African Finfoot
Scarce; best sought at Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary

19) African Skimmer
Frequently seen at Liwonde NP and South Luangwa NP from August to November

20) Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo
Probably intra-African migrant; highly loca: only found in Nkhata Bay forests (where calling season might be restricted to December) and Mvabvi Game Reserve in the very south (where it calls from December to April)

21) Thick-billed Cuckoo
Resident; not uncommon in Lengwe, Majete and Mvabvi Reserves

22) Lillian´s Lovebird
Commonly seen resident at Liwonde NP and South Luangwa NP

23) Green Coucal
Resident; common at Lengwe National Park and in the Nkhata Bay area

Aparently partly resident; common from December to early May; common in Nkhata Bay area

Uncommonly seen resident at Liwonde NP and South Luangwa NP

On night drives seen between September and February; especially Nyika NP; Dzalanyama FR and South Luangwa NP

Resident; commonly seen on night drives on the Nyika Plateau

Apparently resident; not uncommon on the Nyika Plateau

Probably resident; best seen at Lengwe NP and South Luangwa NP

Probably resident; usually found near baobab trees; best sought in Liwonde and Lengwe National Parks

Resident; best seen in the Nkhata Bay Forests; also Lengwe and Lilongwe NS

34) Bar-tailed Trogon
Resident; the evergreen forests on the Nyika Plateau should be the best places at all to see this species

35) Half-collared Kingfisher
Resident; fast-flowing water with well-wooded banks; regularly seen in Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary; also Nkhata Bay area and Nkhotakota Game Resrve

36) Böhm´s Bee-eater
Very common at Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP; also Lengwe NP and in some places along the Lake Shore

37) Racket-tailed Roller
Resident; not uncommon but very shy; in the Mopane woodland of Liwonde NP and South Luangwa NP

38) Pale-billed Hornbill
Resident; in tall miombo woodland; best sought at Dzalanyama

39) Southern Ground Hornbill
Commonly seen resident in the Mopane woodlands of Liwonde NP and South Luangwa NP

40) Green Barbet
Resident in the very south and very north of Malawi, at Thyolo and Misuku Hills; in both places not uncommon

41) Brown-breasted Barbet
Resident; not easily found although not uncommon in the fig trees in Liwonde NP

42) Whyte´s Barbet
Resident; mainly in miombo woodland; South Viphya Plateau; Dzalanyama and foothills of Nyika Plateau

43) Miombo Pied Barbet
Resident; in miombo woodland; not uncommon in Dazalanyama, also Vwaza Marsh

44) Black-backed Barbet
Resident; only found in Malawi near Thazima Gate at Nyika National Park; also in South Lunagwa National Park in Zambia

Commonly seen resident at Dzalanyama FR

46) Green-backed Woodpecker
Resident; not uncommon at the northern Lake Shore as Nkhata Bay area; also Dzalanyama

47) African Pitta
Intra-African migrant and breeding visitor; November to March; scarce in Malawi; might turn up anywhere on migration; suitable breeding habitat found in Lengwe and Lilwonde National Parks.

Common resident but not easily seen; best sought for at Lilongwe NS; Thyolo Mountain; Luwawa Forests or Nkhata Bay Forests

49) White-headed Saw-wing
Intra-African migrant; late September to April; not uncommon in places on the Nyika Plateau

50) Blue Swallow
Intra-African migrant; commonly seen from August or September to April at Nyika and around Luwawa Forest Lodge

51) Angola Swallow
Breeds commonly under the roof of the Zambian Resthouse on the Zambian side of the Nyika Plateau, where present from May to January

Resident; not uncommon on the Nyika and South Viphya Plateaus

Resident; restricted to the (at present inaccessable) eastern part of the Nyika Plateau and Uzumara Forest

Mainly resident; this species is classified as endangered; might still be found on Thyolo Mountain and at Mulanje

Resident, restricted to the rain forests of the Misuku Hils

Resident; very elusive in the evergreen forests of the Nyika Plateau

Resident; elusive in the evergreen forests of the south: Zomba Plateau; Thyolo Mountain and may be the best chances are at Mount Mulanje

Palaearctic migrant and winter visistor; very common in the Shire valley (Liwonde and Lengwe) and on the southern Lake-shore; we have seen a pair in Nkhata Bay in late March

Resident; widespread; confined ti miombo; best sought for in Dzalanyama

70) Boulder Chat
Resident; uncommonly seen at Dzalanyama FR and Chongoni FR

71) River Warbler
Palaearctic migrant and winter visitor; from December until early April; restricted to thickets in Lengwe National Park and Mwabvi Game Reserve

72) Mountain Yellow Warbler
Resident; in Malawi restricted to the Nyika Plateau,where not uncommon

73) White-winged Apalis
Resident; not uncommon at Thyolo Mountain; Zomba Plateau and Zomba town, but stays usually in the canopy of tall trees, therefore not easily seen

Resident; not uncommon in the evergreen forests of northern Malawi

Resident; found in lower areas of Nyika Plateau and best at Chongoni Forest Reserve, where very common

Resident; not present in any protected area; found in short piombo woodland or mature but dwarf woodland on stony soil; feeds in gras and low trees

Probably intra-African migrant; mostly seen from December to May; in long rank grass near water; Lilongwe, Liwonde (where common); also at Safari Cottage in Nkhata Bay

Resident; Nkhata Bay; also at Liwonde NP and Lengwe NP

103) Red-faced Crimsonwing
Resident; not uncommon, but elusive, best seen in the vicinity of water courses in evergreen forests on the Nyika Plateau

Elusive resident; best sought for at Dzalanyama dambos, also Chongoni Fr and Viphya Plateau; also in a dambo near Nkhata Bay

Not uncommonly seen resident; best sought for in dambos in the Lilongwe area

Found at seeding bamboos; uncommonly seen; best sought for at Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary

107) Lemon-breasted Canary
Nomadic species; found at Lengwe National Park, most common in Nyala Park near Lengwe

108) Yellow-crowned Canary
Resident; a split from Cape Canary; confined to Nyika and South Viphya Plateaus where not uncommon

109) Yellow-browed Seed-eater
Resident; uncommon; seems to be most common in the vicinity of Chelinda Lodge on the Nyika Plateau

110) Black-eared Seed-eater
Resident; in miombo woodland; best sought for in Dzalanyama

111) Oriole Finch
Erratic; confined to the inaccessible eastern part of the Nyika Plateau, the Misuku forests and Uzumara, where it seems to be common seasonally (we saw it in late November)
